Xiaomi Announces an Affordable Quad-Core Smartphone, the Red Rice
Xiaomi has just unveiled a low-cost quad-core smartphone, the Red Rice. The phone is equipped with 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6589T quad-core processor, 4.7-inch 720p IPS display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 and 1GB of RAM. The handset comes with 1.3Mp front-facing camera, 8Mp rear-facing camera and MIUI v5 on top of Jelly Bean OS (Android 4.2).
The phone scored 15,000 points on AnTuTu, quite impressive for a $130 smartphone. There’s no reason to be too hopeful about the rest of hardware specs, the frugal 4GB of onboard storage, 2000mAh battery and dual-SIM slots really signify the Rice’s budget status. The MediaTek MT6589 SoC is a consisted of four energy-efficient Cortex ARM A7 cores, which is paired with PowerVR SGX544 GPU, allowing it to easily run H.264 full HD videos.
So far, Xiaomi has succeeded at least on a local level and at first half of 2013, the company gained $2.15 billion in revenue. So far, there’s no telling whether the company will aggressively enter the global smartphone market.
